PETRONAS delivers Christmas relief to vulnerable families in Baram

MIRI: PETRONAS extended year-end assistance to vulnerable rural communities in Baram on Wednesday (Dec 17), distributing food aid to 70 low-income households under its Memacu Kehidupan (Uplifting Lives) Christmas initiative.

The programme at Kampung Uma Akeh focused on easing cost-of-living pressures for families ahead of Christmas, particularly in remote areas where access to assistance remains limited.

The initiative was officiated on behalf of Baram Member of Parliament Datuk Anyie Ngau by Dominic Nyurang Ajang, political secretary to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In his speech, Dominic said the programme reflected PETRONAS’ sustained commitment to social responsibility and inclusive development beyond its core energy operations.

“This initiative sends a clear message that no one should be left behind, especially communities at the grassroots level,” he said, reading out Anyie’s prepared speech.

The aid, comprising essential household food items, was channelled to selected recipients in Baram Hilir, aimed at helping families prepare for Christmas while easing daily living costs.

Dominic said programmes such as Memacu Kehidupan captured the true spirit of Christmas, anchored in compassion, generosity and solidarity, adding such efforts played a key role in strengthening social cohesion and community resilience in rural and interior areas.

The programme also underscored close collaboration between PETRONAS and local stakeholders, including the Telang Usan District Office, government agencies, security forces, the Fire and Rescue Department, and the Majlis Ketua Masyarakat dan Ketua Kaum (KMKK).

Senior PETRONAS representatives, district officials and community leaders were present, reflecting what organisers described as a coordinated, multi-agency approach to ensuring assistance reached those most in need.

“Programmes like this are particularly meaningful as they address real needs at the community level,” Dominic said.

Organisers said the Memacu Kehidupan initiative is being implemented across several locations in Sarawak this year, including Lawas, Lambir, Balai Ringin and Bintulu, highlighting PETRONAS’ ongoing outreach to rural and interior communities regardless of background.
