(Kuala Lumpur, 25th) Malaysia’s Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi said that our country will collaborate with Timor-Leste to implement the ASEAN roaming service, in order to strengthen digital connectivity ahead of the 47th ASEAN Summit which will be held in Kuala Lumpur next month.
He indicated that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has been instructed to immediately discuss and coordinate this initiative with telecommunications companies.
"Many telecom companies already offer their own roaming packages, but we hope to establish a more comprehensive ASEAN roaming service. In this way, Malaysian tourists visiting Dili can enjoy more convenient and affordable internet service."
He said this to reporters from Bernama and Malaysia’s national radio and television station (RTM) at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar yesterday.
Fahmi said that Malaysia can share its experience in rapidly implementing a widely covered and affordable 5G network with Timor-Leste, especially in strengthening telecommunication infrastructure.
He pointed out that among Timor-Leste’s population of 1.4 million, only 15% own mobile phones, highlighting the huge potential for more extensive cooperation in the digital field.
In addition, he suggested that Bernama, RTM, and the Communications Commission establish partnerships with their counterparts in Timor-Leste, including inviting journalists from that country to participate in courses at the Tun Razak Broadcasting and News Institute (IPPTAR).
"This initiative will raise the level of journalism professionalism, enhance media capacity, and provide opportunities to access new technologies."
Additionally, Fahmi said that Anwar's two-day official visit to Timor-Leste concluded yesterday, underscoring its significance as not only the first visit by a Malaysian Prime Minister in 22 years, but also taking place just weeks before Timor-Leste is set to become ASEAN’s 11th member country.
"This historic moment will witness Timor-Leste officially joining ASEAN, coinciding with Malaysia hosting the 47th summit, which holds profound significance for bilateral relations and the region as a whole."
Recently, a Bernama delegation visited Tatoli, the National News Agency of Timor-Leste, to discuss cooperation in news content exchange.
