(Kuching, 7th) Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that the proposed new Kuching International Airport will bring significant economic multiplier effects to Sarawak.

At the 5th-anniversary dinner of the Ministry, Lee Kim Shin outlined the ambitious vision for the region's future, emphasizing the transformative potential of this major infrastructure project.

He emphasized that this project is more than just building an airport; it represents an opportunity for transformation in Sarawak and marks the beginning of an aerotropolis.

“Sarawak is entering an exciting new era, and our Transport Ministry will play a very important role in it.”

He thanked the stakeholders and urged continued cooperation in the airport development process.

He stated that the Sarawak Transport Ministry will begin feasibility studies early next year to determine the most suitable location for the airport, ensuring that every aspect, including flight routes, is meticulously planned.

He mentioned that the new airport is expected to boost Sarawak's economic growth, promote employment, and enhance connectivity.

In his speech at the banquet, reviewing the Ministry's development journey, Lee Kim Shin acknowledged that although the Ministry was only established five years ago, it has been characterized by resilience and determination.

He said that over the past five years, the Ministry has faced unprecedented challenges, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected operations for two years. Therefore, the Ministry effectively had only three years to implement its planned projects and initiatives.

Despite these setbacks, the team has made considerable progress in advancing the Sarawak transport sector.

“Establishing a new department is no easy task; we started from a blank slate. With limited resources and few personnel, we faced many challenges. However, these experiences only strengthened our determination to build a robust transport framework for Sarawak.”
