(Kuching, 7th) Good governance is not limited to combating corruption but also involves cultivating a culture of learning and ethical work practices.
Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, the Minister of Transport of Sarawak, made the above remarks while attending and presiding over the Sarawak Ministry of Transport's Good Governance and Integrity Day.
He emphasized the key role of good governance and the importance of professional ethics in the civil service.
“Governance is not just about integrity; it requires being proactive and understanding the urgency of our work, rather than simply clocking out at the end of the day.”
He highlighted the importance of senior officials guiding junior staff, sharing their valuable experiences, and providing necessary training.
“These initiatives are critical to the development of our organization.”
Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin also urged the ministry to steadfastly adhere to the principles of good governance and enhance its officials' capabilities to improve Sarawak.
“To achieve a high-income Sarawak, we must ensure high productivity and efficiency of our civil servants.”
Additionally, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shinemphasized the importance of civil servants understanding the historical context of Malaysia's foundation in 1963, as outlined by the 1963 Malaysia Agreement.
“Our civil servants must be familiar with our history, the Federal and State Constitutions, and the agreements that define our rights and autonomy.”
When discussing ongoing projects within the department, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin also emphasized initiatives in green energy and the upcoming international airport.
He mentioned the inspiration drawn by Prime Minister Abang Johari from Doha Airport’s vision and encouraged the team to innovate and enhance this concept.
“We have the potential to establish a regional international airport.”
