UN Condemns Israeli Airstrike That Killed 6 Journalists

The spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Guterres, Dujarric, stated on the 11th that Guterres condemns the Israeli airstrike on Gaza City on the 10th, which caused the deaths of several Palestinian journalists.

At a press conference, he said that these recent killings highlight the extreme risks faced by media journalists when reporting on ongoing conflict. Journalists and media workers must be respected and protected, and must be allowed to work freely, without fear or harassment. Guterres called for an independent and impartial investigation into the recent killings of journalists.

UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Condemns

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) also posted on social media on the 11th, condemning the Israeli military’s airstrike on the 10th on a tent where journalists were located in Gaza City, which resulted in the deaths of 6 Palestinian journalists. It stated that this act is "a serious violation of international humanitarian law."

The UN OHCHR emphasized that Israel must respect and protect all civilians, including journalists, and called for the immediate provision of safe and unimpeded access into the Gaza Strip for all journalists.

According to statistics from OHCHR, since the new round of conflict between Israel and Palestine broke out on October 7, 2023, at least 242 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza.

Al Jazeera confirmed on the 10th that Israeli forces carried out an attack near a tent close to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on that day, resulting in the deaths of five Palestinian journalists from Al Jazeera.

According to news from the Gaza Civil Defense Department and Shifa Hospital on the 11th, a freelance journalist who was injured in the airstrike died from his injuries on the morning of the same day.
