(United States, 26th) After a conversation with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, U.S. President Trump announced that the deadline for imposing a 50% tariff on the EU has been postponed to July 9.
Bloomberg reported that Trump told reporters on his way back to Washington on Sunday (May 25), 'We had a very pleasant conversation, and I agreed to delay the deadline.'
According to Agence France-Presse, von der Leyen also posted on social media on Sunday, saying she had a “good conversation” with Trump and promised that the EU would swiftly advance a trade agreement with Washington.
She wrote, 'The EU and the United States have the most important and closest trade relationship in the world... To reach a good agreement, we need time until July 9.'
The EU was originally facing a reciprocal tariff of 20%, but Trump announced in April to suspend the imposition of equal tariffs until July 9, giving the EU time to negotiate with the United States.
However, last Friday (23rd), Trump suddenly increased the pressure, criticizing the negotiations with the EU as 'making no progress' and reiterated that the EU is 'taking advantage' of the United States, threatening to impose a 50% tariff on all EU products exported to the U.S. starting June 1.
