(Switzerland, 26th) The Swiss Valais State Prosecutor's Office reported that rescue workers found the bodies of five skiers at Rimpfischhorn, near Zermatt.
According to Reuters, ski equipment was found abandoned on a slope on May 24th, prompting a report to the authorities. The location in question is Rimpfischhorn, situated east of Zermatt and south of Saas Fee, in the southwestern Swiss Alps, at an altitude exceeding 4,000 meters.
Upon receiving the report, Swiss authorities swiftly initiated a ground and aerial search.
Air Zermatt, an airline frequently involved in mountain rescue operations, stated that three of the bodies were found in a snow avalanche debris area, only a few hundred meters from where the ski equipment was discovered; the other two bodies were located on higher-altitude slopes.
The prosecutor's office mentioned that the identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed, and the specific cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Zermatt is a renowned Swiss alpine skiing destination, attracting skiing tourists from the UK and across Europe with its high-quality slopes and alpine scenery.
