Chinese New Energy Company Visits Kuching Mayor to Explore Carbon Trading and Cooperation Opportunities

(Kuching, 25th) Representatives from Shanghai Baotan New Energy Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. of China, led by Yang Hailing, paid a courtesy call on Kuching South City Mayor Dato Sri Sim Kheng Hui this morning. During the meeting, they exchanged views and discussed possible commercial cooperation between the two regions in fields such as new energy market development, carbon storage, and carbon trading.

Mayor Sim expressed that he warmly welcomes Chinese enterprises with high technology and cutting-edge research results, especially those that have made breakthrough progress in the new energy sector, to visit Sarawak for field inspections and to seek opportunities for setting up factories and investing locally.

"The development of new energy is one of Sarawak's key development projects in recent years. If companies are willing to participate, it will inject new impetus into the local economy and green development."

Mayor Sim pointed out that Sarawak is steadily moving toward the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and has already launched a sound and forward-looking legal framework for carbon management and climate change policy. Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has also emphasized that clear state policies and regulations are an important foundation for establishing a competitive carbon market.

"In terms of carbon management and policy, Sarawak already has strong regulatory support. We are well aware that a clear regulatory environment is the foundation for any successful carbon market."

Mayor Sim also cited the opening speech of the Sarawak Premier at the 2025 Asian Carbon Conference (ACC) held earlier this month at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, which brought together stakeholders from within and outside the country to jointly promote the construction of a regional carbon market.

Mayor Sim emphasized that global warming and low carbon emissions have become challenges that humanity must collectively face, and the Kuching South City Council will fully cooperate with the Sarawak government to achieve the net zero emission target and leave a more sustainable environment for future generations.

On the other hand, Yang Hailing stated that now is the best time for Chinese private enterprises to actively respond to the "Belt and Road" initiative and go global to invest and set up factories. She came to Sarawak's capital Kuching on behalf of several Chinese enterprises for an on-site inspection and will truthfully report her findings and experiences to senior management upon returning to China.

She also introduced to Mayor Sim the actively-prepared "China-Sarawak International" business strategy, which aims to take Sarawak as a base, radiate out to the whole of Southeast Asia, and target the global market.

"In addition to its geographical advantages, Sarawak's real strength is its political stability and the presence of a strong, forward-looking government and leadership team."
