The son of Myanmar’s former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Aris, is concerned that even if his mother passes away, he may not be informed.
In an interview with the media in Tokyo, Aris said he has not received any news about his 80-year-old mother for two years. Since the 2021 military coup that overthrew her government, he has only occasionally received indirect information that she is having health issues related to her heart, bones, and gums.
He said: “She has had health problems all along. For more than two years, no one has seen her. She can’t even contact her legal team, let alone her family. As far as I know, she might already be dead.”
Although Aris holds a negative view of the Myanmar military government’s attempt to hold elections later this month, he thinks the election might bring about a turning point for his mother’s situation.
He speculates that Min Aung Hlaing, leader of Myanmar’s military government, might have his own calculations regarding how he treats his mother. If he really intends to calm public sentiment by releasing her or changing her detention to house arrest before or after the election, it would at least be a step forward.
