Fung Shui-Fan was reported to have passed away yesterday (10/31) at the age of 81. He had lived in Taiwan for many years, remained unmarried and childless throughout his life. Among his publicly acknowledged girlfriends was Hong Kong actress Tsang Ching-Yu, while Law Kar-Ying's wife Liza Wang was his first love. At the time, Liza Wang was dating his close friend, but he stepped in and 'snatched her away.' 'Our relationship was always very public.'
Fung Shui-Fan had a refined appearance and never intended to get married. In 1981, he fell in love with Hong Kong actress Tsang Ching-Yu while filming the TV drama "Feng Huo Fei Hua," but they broke up due to incompatible personalities. He also admitted that his first love was Liza Wang, but she had initially been dating his friend Chiu Sai-Hau. He candidly said, 'I was the one who took her away,' recalling that they started dating in their early 20s. Fung observed that Liza Wang later became 'more and more ambitious' and was unwilling to stay by his side, so they decided to break up. He jokingly said at the time, 'If she stayed with me, that (staying together forever) wouldn't have happened. We definitely had to separate, otherwise it would have been a disservice to the country.'
There was no falling out between Fung Shui-Fan and Liza Wang. In 2009, after Liza Wang married Law Kar-Ying, all three maintained good relations. Fung once shared, 'Even now, whenever Law Kar-Ying sees me, he’ll call Liza Wang and then hand the phone over for me to speak to her.' When asked if he had ever thought about marrying, Fung Shui-Fan had a unique perspective: 'What do you need an old companion for anyway? Women age quickly. I advise women to marry men at least 10 years older than themselves; if the age gap is only two or three years, it's the woman who will be the first to die.'
Fung also revealed that he'd noticed many of his friends' wives seemed to age quickly after marriage, and their appearances no longer matched as a couple, looking more like the man's elder sister. He believed such couples would inevitably grow apart. He also admitted he was aware of his own reclusive personality and found it hard to get along with others, much less maintain a long-term relationship. He joked that if he ever got married, he could imagine fighting with his spouse every day, so it was better not to marry.
