Sarawak Aims for 700 Million ASEAN Market Through Development of Modern Tanjung Embang Port, Says Premier

(Kuching, 16th) Sarawak is targeting the ASEAN market of 700 million residents by developing the modern Tanjung Embang Port and strategic logistics infrastructure, in a bid to strengthen its position as a regional trade hub.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari said that Sarawak’s location in the central part of ASEAN, with its strategic advantages, gives it a significant edge in becoming a key player in ASEAN trade and logistics.

"We are located at the center of the 11 ASEAN countries, so our target market is not just 2.8 million residents, but 700 million ASEAN inhabitants."

"We have the capacity to serve this 700 million population because other ports are further away, whereas we are at the heart of the region. Therefore, our future lies there, as our advantages will make us more competitive and, ultimately, one of the key players in ASEAN."

Abang Johari made these remarks while delivering a speech last night at the 65th Anniversary Dinner of Kuching Port Authority (KPA).

He added that Sarawak’s proximity to China, Hong Kong, and South Korea provides the state with strategic advantages to strengthen its international trade network.

Meanwhile, the Premier said that given Senari Port's possible inability to accommodate the growth in cargo volumes brought on by Sarawak’s economic growth, the port's operations would eventually be relocated to Tanjung Embang Port.

He further explained that the planned Tanjung Embang Port will be located about 20 kilometers off the coast, with a depth of 13 to 16 meters, allowing large vessels to berth without obstruction.

"Therefore, after Senari Port, there will be a further relocation to a site even farther out at sea."
