(Bandar Seri Begawan, 6th) The Airport Economist introduces Brunei's efforts towards economic diversification. An episode of the Australian TV business program The Airport Economist was aired on the streaming platform Ticker on December 4, 2024, focusing on Brunei's efforts to achieve economic diversification.

The episode, titled Brunei's Big Transformation, is hosted by Tim Harcourt, Chief Economist and Professor of Industry at the University of Technology Sydney, who explores Brunei's diversification journey and the role of foreign investment in creating a vibrant and sustainable economy under the Vision 2035 national goals.

The host interviewed Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy, Dato Dr. Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, who illustrated the diversification agenda through an economic blueprint and its five priority areas: downstream oil and gas, food, services, tourism, and ICT. Through interviews with leading companies in these industries—Hengyi Industries, Brunei Fertilizer Industries (BFI), Royal Brunei Airlines (RB), and Royal Brunei Catering (RBC)—viewers gain a deeper understanding of the implementation of the diversification plan from an operational perspective.

As the agency responsible for domestic and foreign investment in Brunei, the Brunei Economic Development Board serves as the knowledge partner for this episode, providing insights into Brunei's commercial and regulatory environment, as well as dedicated support and relationship management under its investor concierge services, promoting platforms for foreign direct investment and bilateral investment.

The Australian High Commissioner to Brunei, Luke Arnold, is the supporting partner for this episode. He stated that the program provides valuable insights into Brunei's economic landscape and potential opportunities for foreign investors.

Ticker's platform is headquartered in Australia and has a strong foothold among local audiences.

Moreover, the host stated that through international distribution, Ticker's total audience exceeds 380 million, with 3.85 million linear views per month, providing significant global exposure for Brunei.

The release of this episode is also timely, as last year, Brunei and Australia upgraded their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive partnership, and Australia announced the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy 2040, which includes a $2 billion fund for Australian investments in ASEAN.

“We have established a dedicated 'trade team' in Bandar Seri Begawan to facilitate Australian investments in Brunei,”

High Commissioner Luke Arnold stated, noting that the team consists of two full-time staff dedicated to bringing more Australian companies to Brunei.

The High Commissioner pointed out that although Australia is one of Brunei's largest export markets and Brunei imports high-quality food from Australia, the investment relationship has yet to reach its potential.

“The focus of advancing the bilateral relationship is to increase two-way investment, especially as both countries embark on significant economic transformations to seize opportunities from the global transition to a green economy.”

The High Commissioner stated that Brunei offers the stability and certainty that foreign investors value, and he has witnessed the country's transformation, especially in emerging industries like fertilizer and halal food centers, which is truly fascinating.

“Brunei has a clear vision for the future; it is an enthusiastic society.”

The entire episode is divided into three parts and will be broadcast on Ticker's 24-hour news channel for a month.
