Sarawak Chinese New Year Gala Celebrates Unity, Sebastian Hopes for Ethnic Cooperation to Promote Development

(Miri, 20th) The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts of Sarawak, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, called on all ethnic groups to cherish Sarawak's ethnic harmony and cultural diversity, continuously promote the spirit of unity, and contribute to the state's cultural and economic development.

He attended the 2025 Year of the Snake New Year Gala hosted by the Sarawak Chinese Association last night and, during his speech at the banquet hall on the fifth floor of the Imperial Hotel Miri, expressed gratitude for the hard work of the organizing committee and the support of sponsors. He praised the gala's successful organization as a testament to the community's cohesion and enthusiasm.

Chen Chao Yew pointed out that Sarawak is home to over 30 ethnic groups, living in harmony and mutual respect, which is Sarawak's unique advantage.

He shared touching stories of cooperation among multiple ethnic groups and emphasized that unity is an essential cornerstone for societal progress and development in Sarawak. He encouraged all sectors to continue fostering a symbiotic relationship of diverse cultures and promote cultural exchange and cooperation.

In his speech, Chen Chao Yew disclosed that Miri boasts two world heritage sites: Niah National Park and Mulu National Park, which are treasures of Sarawak's nature and history that will attract more tourists.

In alignment with the 'Visit Malaysia Year 2026' (VM2026) plan, Sarawak aims to attract more domestic and international tourists through digital marketing, event promotion, and tourism subsidies.

He mentioned that Sarawak's tourist numbers last year exceeded 4.8 million, surpassing the original target of 4 million, and he is confident in reaching this year's goal of 5 million visitors.

Chen Chao Yew praised the efforts of the Sarawak Chinese Association and other ethnic leaders in promoting unity and cultural development. He particularly highlighted the initiative of the Unity Bridge featuring 70 dialects, a demonstration of the diversity and charm of Sarawak's linguistic culture.

Additionally, a record-setting exhibition of ethnic crafts, showcasing 504 kinds of handicrafts, highlighted the creativity and talent of various communities.

He called on all sectors of society to strengthen cooperation, especially in tourism, culture, education, healthcare, engineering, and innovation, injecting new vitality into Sarawak's prosperity and progress.

Chen Chao Yew urged people of all ethnic groups to embrace love and cooperation as their core values and march towards a more harmonious and beautiful future together, wishing everyone health, prosperity, and unity in the new year.
