The Swiss Federal Council on the 17th approved the deployment of military forces to provide security support for the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, which will take place on June 19 at Bürgenstock Mountain in Switzerland, and to temporarily close parts of the airspace during the event.
To ensure security during the signing ceremony, the canton of Nidwalden, where the event will be held, requested support from the federal government. The Federal Council has decided to deploy up to 2,000 military personnel for assistance.
The Federal Council also approved the restriction of the airspace within a 46-kilometer radius around the Bürgenstock area from June 18 to 20. The Swiss Air Force will conduct air patrols and strengthen airspace monitoring.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry had previously confirmed to AFP that the signing ceremony of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding would take place on the 19th at the Bürgenstock Resort in the Swiss mountains.
The resort is located near Lucerne in central Switzerland and is difficult to access, which contributes to thorough security measures. The Swiss Foreign Ministry stated that the location was 'jointly proposed by mediators from Pakistan and Qatar as well as by both the United States and Iran.'
