The Myanmar government has rejected the ASEAN envoy's request to meet with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest.
On June 30, Myanmar presidential spokesman Kyaw Kyaw Soe told the media: "Aung San Suu Kyi has been lawfully prosecuted and is currently serving her sentence. Therefore, she is not allowed to meet with international representatives... Only after her sentence has been completed may she possibly be permitted to meet with international representatives."
In late April, Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing announced that the 81-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi would be transferred to house arrest. The rotating chair, the Philippines, welcomed the transfer of Aung San Suu Kyi and requested that its special envoy on Myanmar be allowed a "brief visit" with her.
Since the coup, ASEAN has consistently excluded Myanmar from high-level meetings.
