Chinese Tourists Caught Defecating Near Gyeongbokgung Palace in Korea; Woman’s Pants Stained, Sparking Public Outrage

Recently, Korean citizens discovered that next to the stone wall of the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, a Chinese man and woman actually pulled down their pants and relieved themselves on the spot, shocking passersby. The woman’s pants even had obvious stains, causing heated discussion in Korean society.

According to Korean JTBC program Incident Captain, a citizen recently complained about seeing a Chinese man and woman, suspected of addressing their physical needs, taking off their pants one after another in the flowerbeds next to the Gyeongbokgung stone wall. The eyewitness claimed the two were tourists from a Chinese tour group of several dozen people. The man was reportedly holding tissue in his hand at the time, while the woman wore light-colored pants, with a conspicuous stain suspected to be excrement visible on her pants.

Onlookers at the scene stated that the two originally intended to leave with the tour group, but police arrived immediately after receiving a report and questioned them at the scene. According to Yonhap News Agency, Seoul police confirmed the incident occurred at around 3 pm on the 10th of this month. In the end, police fined the man 50,000 KRW (about 270 RMB) in accordance with the Minor Offenses Act, but the woman was not included among those penalized.

Regarding the incident, Korean lawyer Park Ji-hoon (phonetic) pointed out that public restrooms are available nearby Gyeongbokgung Palace, and was baffled as to why the two would choose to relieve themselves by the historic stone wall. He criticized the action as seriously damaging the public image, stating: “If Koreans did such a thing at Chinese historic sites, Chinese people would not accept it either.”

In recent years, anti-China sentiment has been on the rise in Korean society, and many locals have expressed dissatisfaction with the uncivilized behavior of large numbers of Chinese tourists. Previously, Jeju Island residents have repeatedly complained that Chinese tourists frequently engage in public defecation, littering, and smoking on buses, sparking local public backlash.
