(Kuala Lumpur, 1st) Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), after successfully easing roadside traffic congestion during a 3-month trial, is now fully implementing the Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) effective immediately. Vehicles stopping at the pick-up/drop-off lane for more than 10 minutes will be fined between RM10 and up to RM100.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani stated that the trial period effectively changed driver behavior, with the proportion of vehicles exceeding the 10-minute parking limit at the pick-up/drop-off lanes dropping significantly from 50% to 21%.
In a statement, he said these results clearly showed the need for full enforcement to ensure smooth traffic flow, especially ahead of the year-end tourism peak and the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
“Trial results show that when vehicles comply with the 10-minute limit, roadside congestion is alleviated.
“The majority of KLIA users comply with the regulations, and starting today, Terminal 1 will fully enforce the related rules to ensure orderly use of the lanes and fair access for everyone.”
VAMS uses a license plate recognition system to record each vehicle’s entry time and automatically calculates the total duration when the vehicle exits.
There is a 10-minute grace period after parking; those who overstay will be fined RM10, up to a maximum of RM100, depending on the length of the overstay. Fines can be paid via Touch’n Go, credit card, or MyDebit.
He said this targeted enforcement aims to keep the lanes clear so passengers can enter and exit the terminal in an orderly manner.
For drivers who need more time, the airport also provides several alternatives, including a short-term car park (first 15 minutes free), long-term car park (first 30 minutes free), and KLIA’s free public waiting area.
