Godfrey Gao’s longtime friend Ben shared two photos that had been on his phone for over ten years on social media. The photos were taken in 2015. He recalled the only time he ever took the high-speed rail with Godfrey Gao, which was a roughly 15-minute ride from Taoyuan to Taipei to run some errands. During the trip, Godfrey left his seat and went to the vestibule to speak on the phone. In the photos, Godfrey is wearing a beanie, with no disguise whatsoever, crouching down to talk on his mobile phone, a casual moment that Ben happened to capture.
Remembering his good friend, Ben laughed and said, “He always talked on the phone super quietly. He looked at me, flipped me off for two seconds, and then kept talking. I really cherished those moments. Even though he was a star, when we were together, it was just like before—we’d drive to the park or to parties. He never put on airs.”
