(Miri, 1st) – Sarawak Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, accompanied by members of the Disaster Management Committee, inspected various temporary disaster relief centers this afternoon.
During a media interview, Lee Kim Shin stated that continuous heavy rains in multiple areas of Miri recently have caused rising water levels, resulting in flooding in some areas. Residents have been forced to evacuate their homes and have been temporarily placed in the disaster relief centers.
He mentioned that the authorities have activated eight temporary evacuation centers to accommodate affected residents, including the Red Crescent Society, Athlete's Village, Miri Religious National School, Miri Marudi National Secondary School, Lutong Zone 2, Lutong Zone 3, Pujut Adong, and Pujut Tanjong Batu.
“Currently, the Pujut Tanjong Batu temporary evacuation center is accommodating 22 families, totaling 113 people, consisting of 58 males and 55 females, including two infants.”
He said that the authorities would continue to monitor the flood situation and hope for an improvement in weather conditions. If there is no rainfall, the water levels are expected to gradually recede, allowing affected residents to return to their homes.
He added that although rainfall has stopped in Permyjaya, Senadin, and parts of Lutong, stagnant water remains, which may be due to blocked drainage systems.
He urged the Miri City Council and the Public Works Department to take immediate action to check for any blocked drains and carry out cleaning work to ensure the smooth operation of the drainage system, preventing stagnant water from continuing to affect residents' lives.
Additionally, after learning that drainage series on Miri Bypass were obstructed due to a contractor's work, causing main drains to be closed and preventing water levels from receding, he immediately requested the relevant units to address the issue to expedite the flow of water.
