He Chaolian’s Wedding Funded by Her Mother; Dou Xiao Refuses to Sign Prenuptial Agreement

Macau casino tycoon’s daughter He Chaolian and actor Dou Xiao have only been married for two years, yet rumors of marital discord have been swirling. On the 22nd, it was reported that Dou Xiao was unwilling to sign a prenuptial agreement, and therefore the couple did not obtain a marriage certificate. There were also rumors that Dou Xiao exhausted his savings for their Bali wedding, but now it’s claimed that in fact, He Chaolian’s mother, SJM third wife Chan Un Chan, funded the wedding with HKD 50 million (about MYR 27.21 million), while Dou Xiao provided a bride price worth HKD 5 million (about MYR 2.72 million).

Macau casino magnate Stanley Ho passed away in May 2020. He had four wives during his lifetime and prepared well ahead as early as 2011 by distributing most of his assets equally among members of the four families, and also set up a new family trust fund valued in the tens of billions of HKD. Children from all four families are beneficiaries of the fund, with each family having a representative with voting rights, and each child receiving a six-figure monthly living allowance.

The 34-year-old He Chaolian is the third wife’s daughter and has been in a relationship with 36-year-old Dou Xiao for four years. In April 2023, they held a grand wedding in Bali. On the 22nd, it was wildly discussed on Weibo that since Dou Xiao is not a ‘family alliance’ partner, he cannot access the He family trust fund, and to maintain appearances, He Chaolian’s mother, Madam Chan Un Chan, paid HKD 50 million out of her own pocket for the wedding, while Dou Xiao presented a bride price worth HKD 5 million.

In addition, there were online rumors that the He family required the signing of a 28-page prenuptial agreement. The terms included: Dou Xiao waiving any claim to the He family’s assets, a 50-50 income split after marriage, and if the marriage lasts less than three years, Dou Xiao must exit any jointly-invested equity at a discounted rate. Regarding this, Dou Xiao reportedly refused to sign, saying ‘marriage isn’t running a business.’ There have also been ongoing rumors that the couple only held a wedding ceremony but did not register the marriage, as there is no record of them in Macau’s civil registry. Rumors about their marital strife are rampant, but both He Chaolian and Dou Xiao have so far remained silent and have not responded.
