A review of the 'celebrity dodging military service' scandal in Taiwan shows that Darren Wang was the first to be caught, and his fee for dodging service reached 3.6 million TWD (about 495,000 RMB), making him the 'king of suckers' compared with other celebrities investigated later. Those investigated afterward paid fees ranging from 100,000 to 150,000 TWD (about 13,000 to 20,000 RMB); among them, Bolin Chen only spent 100,000 TWD.
At the beginning of last year, prosecutors and police investigated the case and found through telecom records that many people sought intermediaries to obtain health examination certificates from major hospitals using 'claims of physical defects or other symptoms' in order to gain military discharge or deferment. In February this year, Darren Wang was linked to military service evasion after being involved in a physical altercation with an Uber driver, which in turn implicated other stars such as Nine Chen and Da Tian Chen. This incident became the second wave of celebrity military dodging scandals, and later in May police expanded the investigation and detained nine celebrities involved in dodging military service.
From 2016 to January 2025, the evasion group charged 50,000 to 500,000 TWD (about 6,880 to 68,000 RMB) to 24 male conscripts, including Nine Chen and others. Even knowing these individuals did not actually have hypertension, the group taught them how to affect blood pressure test results, or arranged for stand-ins to take the exam, in order to obtain hospital-issued certificates of severe hypertension. The syndicate charged based on the customer's fame and tailored dodging solutions for each. Darren Wang spent 3.6 million TWD to hire agents to handle it. Because he was not in Taiwan for long periods and couldn’t attend the appointments himself, he handed over his ID and health insurance card so someone else could impersonate him for the hospital visits.
