ASEAN Must Restore Credibility of 5-Point Consensus; Foreign Minister: South China Sea Should Not Become a Great Power Battlefield

(United Nations, 28th) Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan pointed out that ASEAN must continue to strive to restore the credibility of the Five-Point Consensus, while maintaining the security and stability of Myanmar.
He said ASEAN is deeply disappointed that the ceasefire agreements reached in some parts of Myanmar have been violated and that incidents of violence continue to threaten the safety of civilians.
“Those in power have a responsibility to remember that Myanmar is part of the region, not an isolated country. If we work together sincerely to find a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned solution to the crisis, then the people will welcome a bright and secure future.”
Mohamad Hasan said this while delivering Malaysia’s national statement at the 80th United Nations General Assembly held at the UN headquarters on Saturday (September 28).
He said ASEAN will continue to play the important role of a regional bloc, ensuring regional peace, enhancing security, boosting economic resilience, and advancing the goals of sustainable development.
As ASEAN’s rotating chair in 2025, he said Malaysia also fully understands that achieving peace requires tremendous effort.
“When conflict between neighboring countries threatens to escalate, ASEAN does not stand idly by. We intervene, assembling both sides in Malaysia for negotiations and reaching a ceasefire agreement. ASEAN is currently actively monitoring on the ground to ensure the ceasefire agreement is implemented.”
Mohamad Hasan said it is Malaysia’s honor to shoulder the challenges of Southeast Asia this year, which is also the most significant mission to date.
He pointed out that ASEAN bravely embraces change, expands its membership, actively participates in international affairs, and is committed to addressing internal and external regional challenges.
He emphasized that the South China Sea should not be used as a bargaining chip in strategic competition.
“Southeast Asia and its waters must never again become a battleground for rivalry among superpowers. Therefore, we urge all parties to fully comply with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and refrain from actions that could trigger miscalculations or conflicts.”
Mohamad Hasan also mentioned that Malaysia will continue to uphold the rights and needs of global southern countries, as they have long borne the impact of unequal economic policies, causing developing countries to be marginalized and unable to participate fairly in the global economy.
“Ironically, although we constitute the majority of the world, we lack representation in decision-making, receive insufficient support for development financing, and are marginalized in global governance. These imbalances must be corrected— the voices, needs, and aspirations of the global South are not secondary.”
He said that without putting the global South at the center, a fairer international order cannot be built, and Malaysia will continue to advocate for the dignity, equity, and opportunities of all developing countries.
