(Miri, 16) Sarawak has reached an agreement with the federal government on the issue of natural gas extraction rights and revenue distribution, marking another major breakthrough in Sarawak's efforts to gain autonomous rights. In this regard, YB Adam Yii, Central Propaganda Secretary of the Sarawak People's United Party, stated that this achievement not only consolidates Sarawak's resource management rights but also has a profound impact on Sarawak's goal of becoming a regional energy hub.
YB Adam Yii pointed out that Prime Minister Anwar's announcement clearly establishes Sarawak Petroleum Company (PETROS) as the sole aggregator of natural gas within Sarawak, meaning that Sarawak's leading role in resource management has been recognized by both the law and the federal government. Although the 1974 Petroleum Development Act still applies nationwide, Sarawak's autonomy and decisiveness in natural gas distribution within Sarawak are also acknowledged.
“This agreement positions Sarawak in a leading role in domestic resource development and ensures that the benefits from natural gas resources can better benefit Sarawakians. The cooperation between the Sarawak Petroleum Company (PETROS) and the National Petroleum Company (PETRONAS) will also drive the continuous development of Sarawak's energy industry.”
YB Adam Yii emphasized that the success of this negotiation would not have been possible without the unity and consensus of all ethnic groups in Sarawak. In matters of autonomy, the people of Sarawak have demonstrated strong cohesion, laying a solid foundation for more rights for Sarawak.
He also urged all Sarawakians to cherish the hard-won results and to continue to unite as one and fight tirelessly for the autonomy rights of Sarawak. Resource autonomy is just part of Sarawak's path to glory, and there is still a need to ensure the sustainable development of natural gas resources, create more job opportunities for Sarawakians, and promote economic growth.
YB Adam Yii also pointed out that the Sarawak Alliance Government will not slacken on the road to fight for autonomy. This agreement is an important milestone, but our goal is to further enhance Sarawak's capabilities in resource, education, and health self-management to achieve resource sharing and economic prosperity.
Therefore, he called on Sarawakians to continue serving as a strong backing for the Sarawak Alliance Government in the future, to protect Sarawak, and to build Sarawak into a regional energy center, creating a better future for the next generation of Sarawakians.
