KUCHING, Aug 6: The Sarawak Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded two company owners suspected of soliciting and receiving over RM800,000 in bribes from an individual in exchange for helping to manage an application for land lots in the Kuching district from the Sarawak Land and Survey Department.
According to a statement, a six-day remand order until Aug 11 was issued by Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan after MACC submitted the application at the Kuching Magistrate’s Court 2 earlier last morning.
According to sources, the two male suspects, both in their 50s, were detained at around 8pm on Monday (Aug 4) when they came to give their statements at the Sarawak MACC office.
“Initial investigations found that the suspects were believed to have conspired to solicit and receive bribes as an inducement to assist in managing an application for land lots in the Kuching district for commercial development, even though such an application never existed.
“The offences are believed to have taken place between 2020 and 2021,” the source added.
Sarawak MACC director Hasbilah Mohamad Salleh confirmed the arrests when contacted and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
