KUCHING, Aug 6: The Sungai Bintangor Bridge has been renamed the Datuk Amar Juma’ani Bridge, in honour of the late wife of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Abang Johari signing the plaque to officially open the Datuk Amar Juma’ani Bridge in Kuching on Aug 5, 2025. In his speech at the launching ceremony of the bridge, which Abang Johari officiated at Jalan Ajibah Abol here lastnight, Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Dato Ibrahim Baki said this was to show appreciation for her immense contributions and love for the people of the Satok constituency. “I believe this bridge will not only connect communities but also symbolise the compassion, sacrifice, and legacy of a great leader, mother, and woman who served the people wholeheartedly,” said Ibrahim, who is also the assemblyman for Satok.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari, touched by the move, expressed his appreciation of the bridge’s name change.
“Thank you to the Satok community for this,” said the Premier in his speech.
Touching on the bridge, Abang Johari described it as an ‘engineering masterpiece’ which has its own uniqueness.
“With this bridge, it will be a catalyst for modern urban development. If Bintulu has its Golden Gates (Bintulu-Jepak cable-stayed bridge), then Kuching has its own Rotterdam (Erasmus Bridge)—the bridge in Bintangor,” he said.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, who also delivered a speech, described the bridge as ‘iconic’ and ‘one of its kind’ within the country.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki were among those present at the event. According to a fact sheet by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), with a total cost of RM50.6 million, the bridge features a central tower supported by three massive columns and is complemented by the adjacent Sungai Bintangor waterfront.
The structure spans 108.5 metres across Sungai Bintangor and includes a four-lane dual carriageway.
Together, they are expected to become a new attraction in Kuching, offering visitors a gateway to experience the rich heritage and traditional lifestyle of the surrounding Malay villages.
This iconic bridge design will serve as a landmark and a new tourist attraction, enhancing the city’s identity and drawing both domestic and international visitors, which in turn stimulates local businesses and promotes economic growth.
It will also benefit residents by improving daily commuting convenience, accessibility, and connectivity to surrounding areas.
