(Germany, 3rd) German authorities said that after railway cables were set on fire at two locations in the west, causing hundreds of trains to be suspended, another fire incident has occurred, with preliminary investigations indicating it was also caused intentionally.
According to AFP reports, German state railway company reported on Saturday (August 2) that the latest fire took place a day earlier in Hohenmölsen, Saxony-Anhalt in eastern Germany. In a statement, the German railway company said, “Preliminary investigation results show that this cable fire is also a criminal arson incident.”
The previous two incidents occurred respectively on Thursday and Friday between the western cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg, with the fire sites about a kilometer apart, both causing damage to railway cables.
It is reported that the line involved in Hohenmölsen is mainly used for freight, especially coal transportation. In contrast, the impact on the two western areas was more extensive; the first incident occurred at a railroad junction in Düsseldorf, affecting an important line connecting the Ruhr industrial region with Northern Europe and Switzerland.
The railway company said the fires caused “hundreds of trains” to be canceled or rerouted, disrupting the travel plans of tens of thousands of passengers.
Currently, the affected lines have been repaired, with a total of five sections of cable replaced, each about 20 meters long.
A far-left group calling itself the 'Angry Birds Task Force' claimed responsibility for the first arson incident, stating that the action was taken to prevent the continued operation of a “system that destroys the environment.”
