(Wellington, 3rd) The New Zealand government will charge foreign tourists fees for visiting the most popular tourist attractions, with amounts as high as 40 New Zealand dollars (about 99 Malaysian ringgit), to boost domestic economic growth.
According to Bloomberg, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon stated in a speech on Saturday (August 2nd) that the country’s national parks and well-known trails are seen by locals as "truly precious treasures," and foreign tourists should pay corresponding fees when visiting these sites.
He revealed that this measure is expected to generate about 62 million New Zealand dollars in revenue for the country each year, all of which will be used for the maintenance and improvement of scenic spots and infrastructure.
He said: “I have heard countless times from friends overseas who are surprised that they can visit one of the most beautiful places in the world for free. In these special places, it is reasonable to charge each foreign tourist an additional 20 to 40 New Zealand dollars.”

New Zealand regards tourism as one of the important drivers of its economy. To further attract visitors, the New Zealand government also announced that starting from this November, the expensive transit visa requirement for Chinese tourists will be abolished, in order to enhance convenience and appeal for travel to New Zealand.
