(Kuching, 19th) By 2030, Sarawak is expected to achieve an annual production of 860,000 pigs, with a production value of 1.5 billion Ringgit and export earnings of 723 million Ringgit.

Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi, stated that the state is actively promoting the development of modern pig farms (MPF) and implementing strict biosecurity measures.

“A private company is currently developing a modern pig farm in Ensengei, Serian, covering 500 acres (202 hectares). The facility has a total capacity of 80,000 pigs, began operations in January this year, and has imported 750 breeding pigs from the United States.”

Rundi mentioned that the construction of the first phase of the pig farm is underway and is expected to start production in April next year.

He also revealed that since 2017, Sarawak has exported 380,000 pigs to Singapore, involving an amount of 400 million Ringgit.

Currently, the Pasir Puteh Pig Farming Area (PFA) in Seberang Tirit is recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) as an African Swine Fever-free zone, exporting about 2,500 pigs to Singapore weekly.

Rundi further emphasized the efforts made by the ministry to further increase production, including appointing a local leading company to establish a modern pig farm in Silanteh, Sibu.

“The foundation stone laying ceremony for the modern pig farm was held on November 6 this year, with development work scheduled to begin in December 2024.”

Additionally, the Pasir Puteh Pig Farming Area in Seberang Tirit will reach its maximum capacity of 250,000 pigs, the Ensengei pig area can accommodate 80,000 pigs, and the Silanteh pig farm in Sibu can house 125,000 pigs.

“By 2030, the total number of pigs in Sarawak will reach 500,000, not only achieving self-sufficiency but also establishing itself as a significant regional exporter of pork products.”

He assured that Sarawak could achieve foot-and-mouth disease-free status without the need for vaccination and will continue to make this a key advantage.

“My ministry will continue efforts to support and promote investment from the private sector in the pig farming industry.”

Given the growing interest of major industry players, he also disclosed that the ministry is exploring new potential areas, including the Datuk area in Bintulu, to establish more pig farms.
