Ronald Cheng and entertainment news anchor Sammie Yu got married in 2011. This February, there were rumors that their marriage was on the rocks. In April, Ronald was photographed appearing at the Family Court in Wan Chai. Afterwards, speculation arose that he and Sammie Yu had decided to divorce, but reports claimed that the alimony he offered was too low — 8,000 Hong Kong dollars (approximately RM4,329) per month for one child. Amid these rampant rumors, Ronald Cheng issued a statement on the 18th, stating that the so-called "8,000 Hong Kong dollars alimony" and other claims were seriously inaccurate and "have severely affected me, my children, and my family. I would like to say this to everyone: Yes, we are in the process of handling our divorce."
Ronald Cheng's statement is as follows:
Dear media friends, thank you all for your care and support over the years. Recently, there have been too many rumors and false reports regarding arrangements for our children and finances (including the so-called "HKD 8,000 alimony" which is grossly inaccurate), which have severely affected me and my family. I would like to say this to everyone: Yes, we are in the process of handling our divorce.
In order to protect ourselves and our family, and to avoid excessive use of public resources, we have decided to issue the above statement after discussion. As the matter has now entered legal proceedings, I am unable to comment further on this issue. This statement has been agreed upon and approved by Miss Sammie Yu.
Once again, thank you all for your care and understanding.

Appearing in Court with His Dad
Ronald Cheng and his father, Norman Cheng, arrived at the Family Court together on the morning of the 17th at 10:50 AM. When they left at 1:30 PM in the afternoon, the father and son accepted media interviews. In response to questions about custody matters, Ronald Cheng stated, "We are still negotiating. I also respect the court, which is why I haven't said much before—because we need to wait for the judge's approval before explaining anything to everyone." When asked if the children are currently living with him, Ronald replied, "Half and half."
