If the US Continues to 'Owe Fees', It May Lose Its Voting Rights at the UN

UN Secretary-General spokesperson Dujarric stated on the 8th that if the United States continues to owe its United Nations dues, it may at some point lose its voting rights in the UN General Assembly.

At a press conference that day, Dujarric confirmed in response to media inquiries that the US did not pay its dues last year. He pointed out that, according to Article 19 of the UN Charter, a member state that fails to pay its dues for several years in a row could at some point lose its voting rights in the General Assembly. “This is not a decision of the Secretary-General, but is stipulated by the UN Charter.”

Dujarric added that the provision in Article 19 only concerns the General Assembly; in theory, a country that 'owes fees' is still a member state of the United Nations.

US 'Quitting Groups', United Nations Expresses Regret

In addition, on the 8th, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres released a statement expressing Guterres's regret over the US decision to withdraw from certain UN agencies.

The statement said that, according to the UN Charter, all member states, including the US, are obligated to pay their apportioned share of the UN’s regular budget and peacekeeping budget as approved by the General Assembly. The UN has a responsibility to provide services to those who rely on it. The UN will continue to unwaveringly carry out its mission, and all UN agencies will continue to fulfill the mandates entrusted to them by the member states.

On the 7th, US President Trump signed a memorandum instructing the US government to begin the process of withdrawing from 66 international organizations, UN agencies, and multilateral mechanisms that are "no longer in the interest of the United States," including 31 UN entities.
