Famous veterinarian Dai Gengji is Taiwan's first animal behavior therapist and also the ex-husband of Mandopop sweetheart Zhao Yonghua. On the 3rd, a weekly magazine exposed that Dai Gengji had engaged in verbal sexual harassment, PUA behavior, and body shaming towards female students. Dai Gengji's affiliated hospital responded that it was inconvenient to comment. In fact, this is not the first time Dai Gengji has been embroiled in controversy. During his marriage to Zhao Yonghua, he was allegedly the party who had an affair, leaving Zhao Yonghua heartbroken.
Zhao Yonghua and Dai Gengji were brought together by their shared love of pets. In 1998, Zhao Yonghua went to New York, USA to study animal behavior, where she and Dai Gengji became classmates. At the time, there were no sparks between them, but after returning home, Zhao heard that Dai had a “smiling little black dog,” so she paid a personal visit out of curiosity. This was when they really started to connect, and their romance blossomed from their conversations about pets, leading to marriage in 2000 and settling down in Taichung.
Unexpectedly, in 2008, this seemingly happy marriage hit the rocks. At the time, a weekly magazine photographed Dai Gengji traveling with a woman. When interviewed at the airport, Zhao Yonghua admitted she was shocked, saying, “But we need detailed communication to really understand.” She also admitted that the couple’s communication had decreased. That same year, Zhao Yonghua and Dai Gengji signed divorce papers, ending their 8-year marriage.
After the blow of her marital crisis, compounded by her record company shutting down and her royalties drastically dropping, Zhao Yonghua suffered a complete breakdown, plunging into depression and panic disorders for three years. She constantly questioned herself: “What am I alive for?” At her worst, the sound of the doorbell would make her tremble. She was only cured after seeing a psychologist. However, she has avoided discussing the details of her divorce, merely stating it was a “tragic marriage.” During a time when she was lacking support from her family, Dai Gengji cruelly said: “If you have the ability, just leave. Let’s see where you can go!” This made Zhao feel even more isolated and hurt.
