(Kuching, 24th) A 90-year-old elderly woman became one of the beneficiaries during the Wesak Day rice distribution event today. The event distributed a total of 1,020 bags of rice to local senior residents.
This event was jointly organized by the Malaysian Buddhist Association Sarawak Branch and the Sarawak Buddhist Organization United Association.
In his speech at the event, Huang Hongsheng stated that the activity demonstrates compassion, kindness, and a strong community spirit, and also showcases how various sectors of society can provide practical assistance to those in need through collective efforts.
He said: “Such assistance should complement broader efforts to promote active and healthy aging, encourage seniors’ social participation, and enhance social inclusion.”
“Simple aid such as distributing rice can not only ease the burden on families but also strengthen the spirit of care within the community.”
Huang Hongsheng pointed out that the Kuching South City Council has long emphasized the welfare of the elderly and has continuously worked through the ‘Age-friendly City Committee’ to align with the World Health Organization’s ‘Age-friendly City’ framework to improve seniors’ quality of life.
He added that as the urban elderly population continues to increase, local governments, community organizations, and civil society will need to work more closely together in the future to continuously promote welfare assistance and active aging programs.
