The daughter of legendary Chinese rock musician Dou Wei and photographer Gao Yuan, Dou Jiayuan, recently shared her heavy-hearted journey of growing up in a rare interview, drawing widespread attention. As the half-sister of Dou Jingtong (Faye Wong and Dou Wei's daughter), Dou Jiayuan bluntly stated that her life has been completely different from her sister’s. Because of her parents’ past relationship turmoil, she has endured relentless cyberbullying since childhood, often bombarded with malicious comments questioning if "her birth was a mistake" or that she "should be remade."
This pressure and malice have caused her enormous physical and mental trauma. Dou Jiayuan revealed that as early as age 12, she was diagnosed with affective disorder and other mental illnesses, requiring long-term, possibly lifelong, medication to control the condition. When talking about her relationship with her family, she admitted that it was only in the past two years that she has had substantial communication with her father Dou Wei. On her birthday last year, her father even sent her a red envelope — this rare gesture of care not only shocked Dou Jiayuan, but also moved her mother Gao Yuan, who had raised her alone all these years, to tears.

Nowadays, Dou Wei leads an extremely minimalist life, relying on steady royalties from his early works, the release of experimental music albums, and the occasional composition job to make a living. Reportedly, since 2019, he has been living a secluded and extremely simple life with his mother in Aranya, Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, far from the hustle of Beijing.
