(Kuching, 22nd) A 37-year-old local woman was arrested by police yesterday (21st) in a traffic enforcement operation on Jalan Datuk Bandar during suspicion of drunk driving.
Kuching District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Alexson Naga Chabu stated that the operation, carried out by the Kuching District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Unit, began at 11:30 PM on May 20th and continued until 3:30 AM the next day.
He said that the operation involved one senior officer and eleven personnel, with the goal of ensuring road users do not drive under the influence of alcohol, as this not only endangers other motorists but also the safety of the driver herself.
He issued a statement today saying: "During the operation, the suspect underwent testing with an SD2+ breathalyzer and the results showed a blood alcohol content of 186 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood."
The woman was then taken back to Kuching District Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Alexson pointed out that police are investigating the case under Section 45A(1) of the 1987 Road Transport Act, as the woman's blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit of 50 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood.
If convicted, she faces a maximum jail term of two years, a fine between RM10,000 and RM30,000, and suspension or ineligibility to hold or apply for a driver's license for at least two years from the date of conviction.
During the operation, police checked a total of 65 individuals and 62 vehicles, including 25 cars, 18 motorcycles, 13 four-wheel drive vehicles, and 6 multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs).
In addition, police issued 33 PDRM(K)257 summonses for various traffic offenses.
Alexson stated that police will continue to carry out similar operations from time to time to reduce the risk of traffic accidents caused by drunk driving.
He also advised road users not to drive after consuming alcohol, as this not only endangers other road users, but may also cost one's own life.
