Terengganu Intends to Set Up Special Zones for Safe Firework Displays

(Terengganu, 29th) The Terengganu state government intends to establish “Designated Firework and Firecracker Zones” to regulate the public’s activities of lighting fireworks and firecrackers during festive seasons, in order to maintain public safety and social tranquility.

Terengganu State Executive Councillor for Local Government, Housing, and Health, Datuk Wan Sukairi, pointed out that this move is aimed at preventing the public from randomly setting off fireworks and firecrackers in public places. At the same time, it protects sensitive locations, including hospitals, mosques, prayer rooms, and residential areas, from noise and safety concerns.

“We have received many complaints from the public, especially regarding fireworks and firecrackers being set off near hospitals, religious sites, and residential areas. Therefore, apart from identifying suitable open spaces for these activities, the government will also conduct detailed studies to restrict certain types of fireworks and firecrackers. Additionally, setting rules for firing times, such as no later than midnight, will be considered.”

He made these remarks during an interview with “Shin Chew Daily”.

In Terengganu, a fire broke out unexpectedly at a fireworks and firecrackers stall in Chukai in the early hours of March 13th, igniting a large quantity of fireworks and firecrackers. The resulting display sent fireworks flying in all directions with constant explosions. Nearby residents momentarily thought they were in a war zone and were extremely frightened.

Wan Sukairi further pointed out that designating special zones for fireworks will also help control types of firecrackers that generate excessive noise, thus protecting public order.

He said the locations currently being considered include open spaces away from densely populated areas, such as fields, recreational areas, or other sites approved by the local government.

He added that this forward-looking measure will help reduce the risks of fire hazards, accidental injuries, and public disturbances.

He noted that once the relevant research is completed, the government will comprehensively prohibit the lighting of fireworks and firecrackers in sensitive areas, including densely populated residential areas, hospitals, schools, and petrol stations.
