(Bandar Seri Begawan, 4th)—Brunei is stepping up preparations for its future UNESCO World Heritage nominations.
Heritage experts from the region and around the world have gathered in Brunei to participate in a capacity building seminar supported by the ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC).
In a statement, the AKC said the seminar, titled “Laying the Foundation: Launching Brunei's UNESCO World Heritage Journey,” was organized in collaboration with Brunei's Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) to strengthen Brunei’s preparations for UNESCO World Heritage nominations.
The statement noted that heritage experts from major institutions—including the UNESCO Jakarta Regional Office, Korea Heritage Service Center, Korean National Commission for UNESCO, and Jeju World Natural Heritage Center—shared specific cases of UNESCO World Heritage nominations in Brunei and the region, as well as their broader significance.
The experts also conducted a technical inspection of Ulu Temburong National Park, which has been designated as Brunei’s priority nomination site, to learn about and exchange views on the current state of natural heritage management, biodiversity conservation efforts, and the park’s natural heritage values.
According to the AKC, Brunei’s Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism has been actively committed to the UNESCO World Heritage nomination process, continuously strengthening heritage protection and management frameworks throughout the process while promoting sustainable heritage tourism to enhance the nation's tourism competitiveness.
Brunei’s traditional attire Kebaya and traditional Malay poetry Pantun have recently been successfully inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The AKC stated that approximately 80 participants—including government officials, tourism industry professionals, and academic experts—took part in discussions on nomination requirements, preparation strategies, and how to balance protection and management with tourism development after nomination.
AKC Secretary General Kim Jae-shin said the seminar provided a platform for sharing Korea’s and ASEAN’s experiences with the UNESCO World Heritage nomination process, while also supporting Brunei’s efforts in heritage listing and tourism capacity building.
