Estimates released by relevant Spanish agencies on the 1st show that deaths related to high temperatures in Spain exceeded one thousand in June, marking the highest value for the month since comparable records began in 2015.

According to estimates from Spain's Daily Mortality Monitoring System, the number of heat-related deaths reached 1,029 in June across Spain, surpassing the 1,000 deaths recorded in June 2017 and setting the highest monthly figure since comparable records began in 2015.

This figure is even more than one and a half times higher than the number of heat-related deaths recorded during the hottest June, in 2025 (407 deaths).

The Spanish National Meteorological Agency pointed out that June 2026 became the second hottest June since meteorological records began in 1961, second only to June 2025.

The Spanish National Meteorological Agency said that the average temperature across mainland Spain in June was about 3.2 degrees Celsius higher than the normal average for this time of year. The prolonged high temperatures have had a significant impact on public health.

At the peak of the heatwave on June 23rd, about 35.7 million people in Spain (accounting for 73% of the total population) faced health risks from the extreme heat, with 38% of them facing high risk.

Del Campo, a spokesperson for the Spanish National Meteorological Agency, stated that since 1975, Spain has experienced 12 heatwaves in June, half of which have occurred after 2015.
