Ling Yongqiang Reviews Annual Association Affairs: Fruitful Results from Activities and Exchanges

(Seria, 17th) Brunei Hakka Association President Ling Yongqiang, in his speech at the General Assembly and Respect-for-the-Elderly Gathering, welcomed all members, seniors, and guests to attend the event, and announced that the association was also presenting the 2025 Student Academic Excellence Awards to encourage members’ children to strive for academic progress and pursue advancement.
Ling Yongqiang pointed out that the association convenes an annual general meeting mainly to review the affairs of the past year and to plan the direction of future activities. He stated that the goals set for the 2025 general meeting have, for the most part, been successfully achieved, and expressed gratitude to all the executive committee, advisors, Women’s Group, Youth League, and members for their support and cooperation.
He said that over the past year, the Brunei Hakka Association proactively promoted various cultural exchanges, festive activities, and social welfare projects. Among them, from May 20 to 27, 2025, the association organized a delegation to Taiwan on the invitation of several Taiwanese Hakka organizations, with several committee members and advisors participating in the visit and receiving a warm welcome from local Hakka organizations. Besides sightseeing and engaging in Hakka cultural exchange, the association also explored various business opportunities, especially in agriculture, food, and various specialty teas. He noted that if any members are interested in further understanding or connecting with relevant organizations, they may contact him or the vice president.

As for local events, the Brunei Hakka Association successfully held a Dragon Boat Festival beach activity on May 31, 2025, attracting many members’ children and families. The event featured Hakka traditional food stalls and an array of games, drawing active participation from the public and creating a bustling atmosphere.
On October 4 of the same year, the association also hosted a Mid-Autumn Festival Moon Gazing Party at its clubhouse, which over a hundred members and families attended. The evening’s program included a lantern-making competition, singing and dance performances, with an atmosphere that was both warm and lively, fully showcasing the spirit of unity and harmony among Hakka folks.
Ling Yongqiang also mentioned that the association did not hold its annual anniversary celebration last year, as the executive committee resolved to pause the event for a year. However, the association still actively participated in celebrations and exchange activities with other Hakka organizations, including sending the president, two board members, and two advisors to attend the Sri Aman Hakka Association’s 36th Anniversary Banquet on September 27, 2025, where they interacted with Hakka peers from across Sarawak.

In addition, the association’s president, committee, and advisors organized a delegation to Bintulu on December 13, 2025, to attend the Bintulu Hakka Association’s 25th Anniversary welcoming banquet and dinner, and participated the next day in a local Hakka traditional food charity sale, further strengthening ties with various Hakka organizations.
Entering 2026, the Brunei Hakka Association continues upholding the spirit of respecting and caring for the elderly, as well as looking after fellow Hakka people. Ling Yongqiang stated that during the Lunar New Year on February 7, the association’s committee, Women’s Group, and Youth League formed a visiting team to pay New Year calls to veteran Hakka members at their homes, presenting gifts and red packets to convey their care and best wishes. The senior members and families expressed joy and warmly welcomed the visits.
The association also successfully held its 2026 Lunar New Year Gathering, attracting over 140 members, families, and guests to an evening filled with rich programs and a lively, festive atmosphere.
In promoting technology learning, the Brunei Hakka Association held a “Hakka AI Technology Workshop” artificial intelligence seminar at its clubhouse on February 1, and was honored to have two computer AI experts from Australia speak. Many young members and committee members attended, and through the experts’ presentations, everyone gained a deeper understanding of new AI technologies.

On the charity front, on March 8, the president, vice president, committee, and Women’s Group representatives participated in a charity medical supply donation event hosted by Seria Government Hospital, donating an automatic electric hospital bed and medical supplies to the hospital, giving back to society through concrete action.
Additionally, during Qingming Festival on April 29 this year, the president, vice president, and four committee representatives also visited three Chinese cemeteries to participate in public memorial ceremonies, continuing the traditional spirit of honoring ancestors and remembering the departed.
Discussing plans for the second half of the year, Ling Yongqiang stated that the Brunei Hakka Association will continue to host multiple cultural and social activities, including celebrations of the Dragon Boat Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival party, the association’s 8th anniversary, and plans to organize a group to attend the 2026 World Hakka Conference hosted by the Hainan Hakka Association in China; the location will be Hainan Island and the date is yet to be finalized.
He also revealed that the association will continue to prepare for the 2027 Hakka New Year Gathering and Qingming Public Memorial, hoping that through various activities, they can strengthen member bonds, pass on Hakka culture, and further ties with Hakka organizations at home and abroad.
Ling Yongqiang concluded by thanking all committee members, advisors, the Women’s Group, the Youth League, and all members for their dedication and support over the past year, and expressed hope that everyone would continue to unite and work together to advance the Brunei Hakka Association’s development, allowing the Hakka spirit to continue thriving in Brunei.
