US Studies Possibility of Reducing Troops in Germany, German Chancellor Downplays Differences with Trump

On the 29th, US President Trump posted on social media that the United States is studying the possibility of reducing American troops stationed in Germany, and a relevant decision will be made in the near future.

This is the second consecutive day that Trump has posted about Germany on social media. The previous day, he posted to express dissatisfaction with German Chancellor Merz's comments on Iran, saying, “Merz thinks it's okay for Iran to have nuclear weapons, he has no idea what he's talking about,” and that Germany is performing poorly in both economic and other aspects.

On the 27th, Merz said at an event at a secondary school in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, that the United States launched military action against Iran without any formulated strategy, leading to a current dilemma and is being “humiliated” by Iran.

In 2020, during his first term, Trump announced a significant reduction of US troops in Germany and accused Germany of insufficient contributions to NATO's defense spending.

The US military presence in Germany is a legacy of the Allied military occupation of Germany after World War II and a result of the US's global military deployment. Currently, the US European Command and African Command are both based in Stuttgart, Germany, while the Ramstein Air Base serves as the main logistics base for US military operations in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. According to US Department of War data, by the end of 2025, there will be more than 36,000 American troops stationed in Germany.

On the other hand, German Chancellor Merz stated on the 29th that despite the recent verbal exchanges with US President Trump over the Iran conflict, their relationship remains good.

Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, he said that he and Trump still maintained good dialogue, but from the very beginning he had doubts about the initiation of this conflict.

Merz pointed out that Germany and Europe are bearing the serious consequences brought by the Iran conflict and that the relevant dispute should be resolved as soon as possible.
