Netanyahu Declares Precondition for Israel-Lebanon Negotiations: Elimination of Hezbollah

(Israel, 12th) Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a statement on the evening of the 11th, stating that the "elimination of (Lebanon's) Hezbollah" is a precondition for Israel to enter into ceasefire negotiations with Lebanon.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Netanyahu said that in response to the Lebanese government's proposal to start direct peace talks, Israel has set forth two conditions: first, the disarmament of Hezbollah, and second, the establishment of a "truly sustainable peace agreement that will last for generations."

Netanyahu also said that Israel will continue to take action against the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the Gaza Strip.

On the 9th, Lebanese Hezbollah parliament member Ali Fayad called on the Lebanese government to make Israel's adherence to the ceasefire agreement a precondition for any subsequent actions, and emphasized that the Hezbollah parliamentary bloc opposes direct negotiations with Israel.

After the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire agreement came into effect in November 2024, Israel not only refused to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon, but also frequently launched airstrikes on the grounds that Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah was attempting to rebuild military strength and violating the ceasefire agreement, while putting pressure on the Lebanese government. After the United States and Israel launched large-scale military operations against Iran on February 28 this year, fighting between Lebanon and Israel reignited.
