70-year-old Hong Kong director Wong Jing has recently gained attention by sharing stories and personal insights about the entertainment industry on social media. On the 28th, Wong Jing posted a video talking at length about his good friend Alex Man (Wan Chi-leung), praising him as a very good person. Although Alex often plays triad boss characters, Wong Jing emphasized that in real life, he is not connected to the underworld. He even revealed the experience of Alex Man being beaten in a disco.
In recent years, Alex Man has been residing mainly in China, and his health has become a frequent topic among netizens. Many people have mistakenly assumed he is really underworld-related. In his video, Wong Jing shared that Alex Man was once beaten by a triad figure over a single word: “He was at a disco and met a very famous gang figure known as Brother AB. Someone came over to introduce Alex to Brother AB, and Alex Man said, ‘Hello AB,’ but then got beaten.” At the time, Alex Man was assaulted just for addressing the gangster by name: “His followers said, ‘How dare you call him AB? Even we don’t call Brother AB by name.’”
Alex Man has starred in numerous classic TV dramas and films, holding a significant status in the entertainment industry, but he has not become extremely wealthy and now seldom appears on screen. Wong Jing explained this might be related to Alex Man’s rather neurotic acting style: “Alex Man has worked on several films with Andy Lau and Chow Yun-fat, and his acting was always very exaggerated. It left Chow Yun-fat saying, ‘How am I supposed to act with you? If I compete in exaggeration, I can't beat you. So Chow Yun-fat said, the only way to deal with him is, whenever Alex acts very exaggerated, moving his body and arms all over, I just stand still and stare at him, and in this way, you can clearly see the difference between our acting.”
