According to the U.S. Geological Survey's earthquake information website, the earthquake struck at 1:37 p.m. local time on the 16th (4:37 a.m. Malaysia time on the 17th), with the epicenter located 87 kilometers south of Sand Point, Alaska, at a depth of 20.1 kilometers.
The likelihood of casualties and property damage is very low.
After the earthquake, the U.S. National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.
However, the warning was later lifted.
