(Miri, 23rd) Miri Huaguang Temple is scheduled to host the “Ullambana Festival Grand Event in Miri Huaguang Temple, Year of the Wood Horse” on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month (August 27, Thursday, in the Gregorian calendar). Preparations are progressing smoothly, and the organizers warmly welcome all devotees and disciples to participate enthusiastically.
The chairman of the festival’s organizing committee, Chai Song Sheng, together with committee members, announced at a press conference today that the temple has successfully invited Venerable Shi Shang Zheng Xia Ding, the principal Dharma Master from Qingliang Monastery in Raub, Bentong, West Malaysia, as well as Venerables Shi Dang Yuan, Shi Xuan Xing, and Shi Ru Fa to jointly preside over this year’s Ullambana Dharma Assembly. The committee expresses deep gratitude to the masters for their compassionate virtues and meritorious acts of sheltering both the living and deceased, describing their merits as immeasurable.
Chai Song Sheng pointed out that the purpose of the festival is to pray for the transcendence and liberation of generations of ancestors, parents, karmic creditors from past lives, wandering souls without descendants throughout all realms, sentient beings of the six paths, local deities, and infant spirits—to appease these souls. The event also aims to bless current families with disaster alleviation and merits, and to wish the people of Malaysia peace and prosperity, favorable weather, and safety from epidemics and other disasters.
He further explained that this year’s Ullambana Festival activities are diversified, with entertainment and singing performances featured in the “Seventh Month Stage Show.” During the Dharma Assembly, the temple will be open for devotees to offer incense and pray for blessings, and will provide options such as the gold burner (RM500), silver burner (RM300), and regular burner (RM30) for participants to dedicate merits to their ancestors, karmic creditors, infant spirits, and “good brothers” from the vicinity. Taking part in such merit dedication can help remove inexplicable obstacles for the living, gain immense merits, facilitate smooth undertakings, and bring wisdom, happiness, and auspiciousness.
The highlight of the evening celebration will be the “Grabbing Ritual,” with overall festivities expected to conclude at 11:30 PM.
Chai Song Sheng also called on disciples participating in the festival to attend the “Purification Ceremony” at the temple at 3 PM on the eve of the Zhongyuan Festival (14th day of the 7th lunar month, Wednesday). This ritual will cleanse the Dharma venue, invite all lost souls to come and support the Buddha Dharma, and ensure that devotees arrive physically and mentally purified and free from afflictions.
