The United States Secret Service stated on the 4th that an officer-involved shooting incident occurred near the National Mall in the capital, Washington, that afternoon. One person was shot by law enforcement officers, and another person sustained a graze wound from a bullet.
The Secret Service published a statement on social media saying: "Secret Service personnel have arrived at the scene of an officer-involved shooting at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, DC. One individual was shot by law enforcement and their condition is unknown at this time. Please avoid the area; emergency responders are on-site handling the situation."
Subsequently, the Secret Service stated that the incident was triggered by an armed individual who had a confrontation with Secret Service officers. The person who was shot was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.
The incident occurred near the Washington Monument, not far from the White House.
According to US media citing officials, the White House was briefly locked down after the shooting incident. Roads in the area near the scene have been closed.
