The Malaysian government has expressed its willingness to negotiate with the United States on four key issues, including reducing the trade deficit, addressing non-tariff barriers, enhancing technological security measures, and exploring the possibility of signing a bilateral trade agreement.
The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry issued a statement saying that Malaysia is ready to continue cooperating with the US to seek mutually acceptable solutions regarding the reciprocal tariff measures announced by US President Trump.
On Thursday (US time), Trade Minister Tengku Zafrul led a delegation in Washington to meet with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamison Greer to discuss the issue of reciprocal tariffs.
“Malaysia is encouraged by the US's earlier announcement of a 90-day tax deferral and views it as an opportunity for constructive engagement.”
“Malaysia has stated that it will not take retaliatory action against the US but is willing to seek outcomes that are acceptable to both parties on concerns raised by the Trump administration.”
Regarding the talks, the Ministry of Trade emphasized that the US has always been one of Malaysia's most important and strategically significant economic partners.
The statement said that for several decades, US companies have played a significant role in Malaysia's economic development, bringing tangible benefits to businesses and the workforce in both countries.
“The Ministry of Trade also highlighted that the bilateral trade performance over the past ten years has been strong and is increasingly balanced, especially as the US's recorded trade deficit has shown a downward trend, reflecting favorable changes in bilateral trade.”
Therefore, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry stated that Malaysia will explore alternative solutions to address US concerns while ensuring mutually beneficial trade flows between the two countries.
On the other hand, Tengku Zafrul said his first meeting with Howard Lutnick and Jamison Greer was a step in the right direction.
“We will continue to maintain this momentum and promptly follow up on some key issues discussed in the meeting. Malaysia also reiterated that it will keep all communication channels open and will continue to seek a friendly resolution.”
Additionally, the Ministry of Trade noted that the talks also explored how the US can strengthen cooperation with ASEAN, especially as Malaysia serves as ASEAN's rotating chairman this year, providing an opportunity to advance common goals and regional stability.
