(Miri, 9th) Sarawak's Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated that the teachers at SJKC Chung Hua Tudan must enhance their Chinese teaching abilities because 70% of the students at the school are non-Chinese, posing a certain difficulty for teachers, especially in Chinese language instruction.
He said that teachers must strive to help non-Chinese students reach the level of Chinese students in learning Chinese, and he hopes teachers can offer more encouragement and assistance to non-Chinese students.
Lee Kim Shin made these remarks during his speech at the 2025 Lunar Year of the Snake Chinese New Year celebration held at the SJKC Chung Hua Tudan auditorium.
As the school board chairman, Lee expressed his pleasure in seeing SJKC Chung Hua Tudan host the Chinese New Year celebration, with students dressed in red as part of the event, which he sees as a positive phenomenon that adds to the festive atmosphere.
"I believe the teachers have informed the students that red is the main theme for the New Year because red represents all good things, and it's important for students to understand this."
He mentioned that, since the school encompasses 28 ethnic groups, this activity can help students understand the various ethnic festivals, including the Spring Festival, Hari Raya, and Gawai Dayak, among others.
"During these festive occasions, everyone, regardless of race, extends greetings to each other, which is a unique environment in Sarawak that enhances ethnic unity. I hope this traditional culture can continue to be gloriously inherited and passed down."
He suggested that schools can focus on the cultures and festivals of various ethnic groups, organizing celebratory events during various festivals.
"New Year greetings are all about hoping for better development in the new year, which is a traditional Chinese value worth upholding."
