Alan Ling Calls for Strengthened Local Waste Management and Strict Law Enforcement to Tackle Littering

(Miri, 9th) Sarawak's Democratic Action Party Secretary Alan Ling recently received multiple complaints from the public about the Emart Commercial Center in Miri riam, where a mountain of garbage has accumulated, emitting a severe stench, and seriously harming the health of passersby and the city's appearance. He immediately visited the site for inspection and found the situation far worse than expected. The scale of the garbage pile not only affects the surrounding environment but also brings great inconvenience and distress to citizens.

On-site, he stated that the foul odor from the garbage has spread to the surrounding areas, forcing passersby, especially children and the elderly, to cover their noses. Exposure to such harsh environments could lead to various health issues. Additionally, the garbage pile severely affects the city's appearance, leaving a very poor impression and damaging the community's image.

He plainly stated that this situation is clearly an unignorable public health issue, and the municipal council and relevant departments must immediately take action to ensure the living environment of citizens is protected. He urged the municipal council to set up regulated garbage stations or large trash bins in bustling commercial areas and residential zones, so merchants and residents can properly handle their waste and demanded that the council must clean regularly to avoid prolonged garbage accumulation in public areas.

Furthermore, he suggested that the municipal council should increase the enforcement of laws and take strict measures against offenders, as a clean cityscape is a basic responsibility of all citizens, which requires a high level of civic-mindedness.

He emphasized that "the garbage issue is not just an environmental problem, but a public health problem as well. We cannot sit idly by; practical measures must be taken to protect the interests of citizens and the image of Miri city."

Alan Ling stated that the Democratic Action Party of Sarawak will continue to monitor and oversee the municipal council's efforts in environmental hygiene improvements to ensure that Miri city becomes a cleaner and more livable city.
