On the 27th, U.S. President Trump advocated that billionaire George Soros and his son should face criminal prosecution.
Trump believes that the Soros family are the masterminds behind “violent protests” across the United States.
On the social media platform Truth Social, he said: “Soros and his wonderful far-left son should be prosecuted under the RICO Act for their support of violent protests and much more.”
He stated: “Soros and his group of psychopathic associates have caused immense harm to our country! This also includes his crazy West Coast friends.”
He said: “We will no longer let these lunatics tear America apart. Be careful, we're watching you!”
On the other hand, the Open Society Foundations, the charity founded by Soros, pointed out that Trump’s accusations against Soros and his son are “shameless and false.”
In a statement to AFP, the foundation said: “The Open Society Foundations have not supported or funded violent protests.”
During street protests that broke out in Los Angeles, California in June due to a surge in immigration raids, long-standing conspiracy theories about the Soros family once again became rampant.
Soros has also been accused of contributing to the migrant crisis in Europe and at the southern border of the United States, as well as orchestrating large-scale protest movements, including the anti-police demonstrations that erupted in the U.S. in 2020 after the death of African-American George Floyd, who was killed by police kneeling on his neck.
Born in Hungary and now 95 years old, Soros has long become a demonized figure in the eyes of the far right in both Europe and the U.S. due to his support for progressive causes and the U.S. Democratic Party. The attacks faced by Soros, who is Jewish, have often been cited as stemming from anti-Semitism over the years.
