(Kuala Lumpur, 26th) The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) stated that the investigation into Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar's overseas bank accounts was completed in 2022, with no evidence or indication showing Anwar’s involvement in any criminal offense of corruption or abuse of power.
The MACC issued a statement noting its concern over allegations circulating on social media platform TikTok, which claim Anwar was mentioned during a 2013 parliamentary session as having 20 overseas bank accounts, including in Israel.
"The MACC investigated these allegations in 1999, but the investigation found no evidence or indication showing Anwar’s involvement in any criminal offense of corruption or abuse of power."
The MACC noted that former Investigation Director Dato' Abdul Rasah had also explained this investigation result in a sworn affidavit in 2009.
Additionally, the MACC said that "Harian Metro" also published a news report titled "It's been 5 years, WikiLeaks has only now denied" on October 5, 2018, stating that WikiLeaks also denied having ever published any information on Anwar having any bank accounts.
The MACC cautioned all parties not to make any speculations that could potentially confuse the public or damage individual reputations in the absence of evidence.
"Spreading unverified information may cause confusion and disrupt public order. The MACC is committed to conducting investigations independently, transparently, and with integrity, in accordance with national laws."
