(Miri, 9th) Northern Sarawak Water Supply Management Company (LAKU) held a two-hour chlorine gas leak emergency drill at the Lambir Water Filtration Station today, aiming to enhance the capabilities of the company's Emergency Response Team (ERT) in handling hazardous chemical leaks.

The drill was guided by Harold Altajulian and involved multiple agencies, including the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Department, Miri Police, Civil Defense Force, and the Miri Hospital Emergency Department.

The main goal of the drill was to strengthen the coordination between the Northern Sarawak Water Supply Management Company's Emergency Response Team and external agencies, test the effectiveness of communication and resource sharing, and ensure consistency in emergency response strategies across all relevant units.

The Lopeng Fire and Rescue Department played a major role in the drill, responsible for controlling the chlorine gas leak, neutralizing harmful gases, and ensuring the safety of the affected area. Firefighters also needed to monitor air quality, conduct rescue operations, and prevent and respond to potential fires.

The Miri Police were responsible for controlling the area and traffic around the water plant to ensure the evacuation process proceeded smoothly. They also needed to maintain public order and prevent external interference with rescue operations.

The Civil Defense Force was mainly responsible for the evacuation and resettlement of affected individuals, providing temporary shelters, and managing the logistics support of rescue supplies. They also provided basic living and medical support to affected communities.

The Miri Hospital Emergency Department was responsible for providing medical assistance to individuals exposed to chlorine gas. They set up a medical station at the accident site to promptly provide first aid for victims experiencing breathing difficulties, eye, or skin irritation symptoms, and conduct health monitoring.

Northern Sarawak Water Supply Management Company CEO Daniel Bonan praised the joint efforts of all agencies. He stated that the drill demonstrated the importance of efficient coordination and communication in responding to emergencies.

He emphasized that through this drill, the emergency management capabilities of all rescue teams were further enhanced, helping to ensure the safety of employees and surrounding communities and ensuring a swift and effective response in the event of high-risk incidents.

Besides the participation of the Fire Department, Police, Civil Defense Force, and Miri Hospital personnel, the drill also involved village heads and residents from surrounding villages, with a total of 61 participants.
